Merovingians through History

Les Derniers MérovingiensThis is a long-term project, which will be completed long after all the others listed here. It has so far resulted so far in just one publication, an article in Early Medieval Europe 20 (2012) on “The Merovingians from the French Revolution to the Third Republic”. I want to explore the ways in which the royal dynasty of the Merovingians (who ruled the Franks between 481-ish and 751/2) were regarded in later centuries, in history, myth and popular tradition. I have not yet made up my mind, but I suspect I shall restrict myself to France. The Merovingians played a fascinating role in the development of the French identity, both before and after the Revolution.
